The certification of the fatty acid profile and the cholesterol mass fraction of two edible oil and fat materials : Soya-maize oil blend CRM 162 : Beef-pork fat blend CRM 163
This report describes the preparation of two edible oil and fat reference materials (CRM 162: soya-maize oil blend and CRM 163: beef-pork fat blend), and the certification of their fatty acid profile (individual components expressed as the mass fraction (g/100 g) of the total fatty acid methyl esters) and cholesterol mass fraction. After blending and addition of antioxidant, the reference materials were sealed in brown glass ampoules in units of 5 ml. Details of the studies undertaken to demonstrate homogeneity and stability of the materials are given, together with the results of preliminary intercomparisons of methods for determining the fatty acid profile and cholesterol mass fraction. The results of two certification exercises involving fifteen laboratories, using a variety of methods, are presented and discussed. Indicative values are given for sterols other than cholesterol; the total sterol mass fraction; cis:cis 1,4-pentadienoic acids (polyunsaturated fatty acids- PUFA); tocopherols; fatty acids in the glyceride <2> position. It is envisaged that these reference materials will be useful for the chromatographic determination and identification of fatty acids, cholesterol and other sterols in oils and fats.
