The investigation of actinides has been of interest because of their unique electronic structure. The aim of this work was to correlate the electronic structure with the surface reactivity of actinides and their compounds. It is well known that the 5f electrons of the light actinide elements have itinerant behaviour. However, the degree of delocalisation decreases along the series, and for Am the 5f electrons are localised. The first detailed gas adsorption studies (O(2), CO(2), CO and C(2)H(4)) on Pu metal are reported. Results are compared with previous measurements on U.
