If nuclear fusion can be used to generate electricity, it will give access to a new and practically unlimited energy source which will not damage the environment in the way that the gases responsible for the greenhouse effect and acid rain do. Nuclear fusion reactors are also safer because any fault automatically causes the system to stop operating. JET (Joint European Torus), is the largest fusion experiment in the world. It is a joint venture set up in 1978 and is staffed by personnel from the twelve member states of the European Union, the European Commission, Sweden and Switzerland, and is the result of many years of research on nuclear fusion.
