Abstract

Two knowledge based systems (KBSs) are presented: (i) RAMINO (Reliability Assessment for Maintenance and Inspection Optimization), tackling the problem of the estimation of the reliability index and the residual lifetime of complex structures; (ii) BOSS (Backtracking and Overviewing for Structural Safety), aiming at supplying the plant supervisor with a fast, intelligent tool for the surveillance of critical regions of the structure. The advantages of the KBS approach for a safe and economical management of nuclear power plants are described. The main factors, technical as well as regulatory, that at present impede a wider application of KBSs are also outlined.
