This paper describes how a GIS is being implemented and used to promote and support a policy of sustainable environmental management for a European natural park in the commune of Attert, Belgium. The rural territory of the commune is described and management practices of recent decades are discussed. A prototype GIS has been implemented, including digitised maps of the existing sector plan, the forest areas, soil types, geology, landscape characteristics and river and road networks. The prototype has been used to illustrate how the GIS can be used for spatial analysis relating to management options and as an effective means of communicating ideas and proposals to interested parties.
