This paper discusses the rationale behind fusion research. Energy sources for the twenty-first century are discussed and, within this context, fusion reactors and the fusion process are described. The basic difference between fission and fusion reactors is examined and fusion development targets are discussed. The capital cost of various energy technologies is outlined and conclusions as to the potential role of fusion in the long-term world energy supply are presented.
