This work concerns the development of a two-stage process for upgrading lignite utilisation based on initial hydropyrolysis followed by CO gasification. Such a process maximises the yield of high heating value hydrocarbons, minimises the formation of heavy liquids and tars, and exploits a waste gas (carbon dioxide) associated with the greenhouse effect. The methodology used is described and the different stages of the work are presented under the following headings: (i) fluidisation; (ii) lignite hydrogasification; (iii) lignite and char CO(2)-gasification; (iv) two-stage lignite gasification; (v) carbon monoxide hydrogenation.
