In order to explore atmosphere/vegetation interactions, a formulation of the coupling between the atmosphere and vegetation is useful. An expression has been derived for the elasticity of evaporation with respect to canopy conductance. The assumptions upon which this expression rest are examined and, in particular, the importance of the stomatal feedback is considered. An alternative derivation for the elasticity of evaporation to conductance is suggested, and the theoretical and practical implications in terms of the role of vegetation and the estimation of latent heat flux are discussed.
