Abstract

The collisionless ion orbit losses to the target in a single null convertor configuration is proposed as a mechanism for explaining the asymmetries in plasma parameters, such as density and electron temperature between the strike zones. The latter show strong dependence on the direction of the ion del Beta drift. Experimental evidence and theoretical justification for the formation of edge toroidal momentum is presented. Such toroidal momentum can be generated by ion orbit losses from the region of about one ion poloidal Larmor radius inside the separatrix to the target. After this toroidal momentum has been transferred to the SOL by the perpendicular viscosity, it contributes to the parallel motion of particles in the SOL region and to the poloidal rotation of the SOL plasma.
