This report discusses study designs for the assessment of the health effects of exposure to ambient air pollution. Research issues in air pollution epidemiology are described to indicate the current trends. Methodological problems which must be taken into account when designing an air pollution health effects study are discussed including validity issues, statistical issues and meta-analysis. Seven specific study designs are then presented involving experimental and semi-experimental studies; geographic or spatial studies using aggregated data; temporal studies using aggregated data; cross-sectional studies; and panel, cohort and case-control studies.
