Abstract

Freshwaters and groundwaters are analysed routinely to monitor the level of contamination by substances such as nitrates. To verify the quality of these determinations, an interlaboratory exercise was conducted to identify the pitfalls observed in the determination of nitrate at three levels of concentration (0.5, 8 and 53 mg/kg). This first step allowed the study of the feasibility of the preparation of candidate certified reference materials (CRMs) for the determination of nitrate in freshwater. The homogeneity and stability of the materials used in the exercise were verified using a specially developed flow-injection analysis technique.
