Abstract

This report contains an overview of the main Community research activities carried out to support the applications of robotics, and also considers non-Community research activities being carried out on the basis of intergovernmental agreements between all European countries. It lists the main European R&D programmes in the field of robotics, i.e. ESPRIT, BRITE, TELEMAN and EUREKA, and explains their activities and their results. An overview is given of other R&D programmes related to robotics, including Community research programmes dealing with nuclear fusion, safeguards and decommissioning of nuclear installations, as well as the non-Community programme managed by the ESA into space activities and technologies for peaceful purposes. Finally the report examines advanced research activities carried out at JRC Ispra, which aim to develop a mobile robot controlled by a neural network.
