Abstract

The ocean colour studies carried out in Europe have culminated in the OCEAN (Ocean Colour European Archive Network) project, devoted to the generation and exploitation of bio-optical databases on all major European seas. This paper reviews the first results obtained by the OCEAN project in the exploitation of the available historical data set generated by the CZCS experiment on the European marginal and enclosed seas. The contribution that value-added ocean colour data can give to the assessment of environmental conditions is addressed. Current programmes for the exploitation of future optical observations missions for studies of the marine environment in Europe are reported.
