Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The problems associated with agricultural production and soil conservation require precise information on the properties of soil and their localisation. A geographical database of the soils of the European Union and neighbouring countries has therefore been developed. This paper describes the main stages of its development and presents the CORINE and MARS projects which have been involved in its production. The structure of this relational database is described in detail. The present state of the work covers a semantic aspect (extension of the base by the addition of attributes, profiles, rules of pedotransfer etc.) and a geographical aspect (extension to other countries).
