Abstract

The aim of this work is to propose a gradient dependent fatigue criterion and check its predictive capabilities for non-zero gradient multiaxial stress systems. Uniaxial experimental results (bending and torsion) are examined to demonstrate the gradient effect. Based on these results a gradient dependent fatigue criterion of the critical plane type is formulated. The proposed formula is applied in fully reversed in-phase bending and torsion loading. It is shown that, within the framework of the proposed approach, the discrepancies between experimental results of gradient-free stress conditions and loads introducing non-zero stress gradients are eliminated.
