This paper focuses on the development and use of non-animal tests and testing strategies and the validation of these alternative methods. Formal validation studies should be preceded by proper test development, and an interlaboratory trial involving appropriate sets of coded chemicals should form part of the validation process. The formal acceptance into regulatory practice of new tests, test batteries or testing strategies is discussed and the role of the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods in promoting validation and acceptance is outlined.
