Abstract

The aim of this study has been to quantify the different factors of scatter and their influence on global toughness measurements. For this purpose, a probabilistic analysis, called local approach, has been used in cleavage fracture. Mechanical properties and local criteria of the different zones (base metal and heat affected zones) were measured. A validation attempt was made on a simple weld configuration. A brittle zone of well-controlled dimensions was then produced with an electron beam in order to be intercepted by the crack front. Finally, a multipass weld was studied. Results show that it is possible to obtain a realistic prediction of the fracture toughness with the local approach.
