Abstract

About 300 tons of metallic radwaste with specific activities of up to 500 Bq/g have been conditioned by melting. For safe use of the cast blocks in a conventional foundry, the Cs-content is of great importance. It has been shown that 99 % of the activity of the blocks consisted of Co-60 and 1 % of Cs-137. By means of a test during which low activity material was poured over high activity material, it was verified that releases can be controlled in the melting plant and that no additional radiation exposure affects personnel. This melting procedure allows safe conditioning of radioactive scrap of up to 500 Bq/g.
