  • Toughness of a pressure vessel steel (A 533B C.1) in the ductile-to-brittle transition zone : Prediction of the limit for stable crack propagation

Abstract

The main aim of this project was the study of failure by crack propagation in the ductile-to-brittle transition zone of a bainitic steel used for nuclear pressure vessel construction (A 533B grade 1). The main aim was the development of a micromechanism-based predictive model for the brittle failure probability, useful for local approaches to fracture problems. This has been fulfilled by developing a probabilistic model of general validity for ferrite/carbide steels or for any potentially brittle polycrystalline metal containing a dispersion of brittle particles. In the ductile-to-brittle transition zone, the macroscopic as well as the local conditions for stable crack propagation were thoroughly studied in detail. The results pertaining to ductile fracture mode together with an elementary analysis are presented separately from the main body of the report.
