A realistic description of the surface geometry of engineering surfaces and a subsequent link between the geometry and its function can only be carried out reliably through 3-D analysis. The absence of international standards in 3-D topography are a hindrance to such an activity. This work is the result of a project aimed at laying down the basis for a unified approach to 3-D surface finish assessment, and investigates all measurement variables, the fidelity of the measurement process and data pre-processing. Parameters for 3-D topography characterisation are also proposed and the functional significance of some of the parameters is assessed.
