Abstract

The aim of this publication is to highlight the importance for the European Community of desertification as a major environmental problem in the European Mediterranean, in terms of the extent of the area affected as well as the interdisciplinary approach that is required. The interaction of biotic, abiotic and socioeconomic processes, which characterise the problem, is explored in terms of an integrated dynamic framework which has its basis in the theory of complex systems. Initiatives directed at the monitoring and control of desertification in the Mediterranean need to reassess the thinking behind traditional predictive models in order to improve the effectiveness of actions and policies in the achievement of sustainable land management.
