Abstract

This report describes the preparation of a series of lyophilised bovine urine reference materials (CRM 386-391) which have been certified for their diethylstilboestrol, dienoestrol or hexoestrol mass concentration. Blank urine and urine obtained from treated animals were prepared in lyophilised form for each analyte. Details of the studies undertaken to demonstrate the homogeneity and stability of the materials are given. Eleven laboratories participated in the certification study. Ten analysed the materials with gas chromatography-isotope dilution mass spectrometry and one laboratory used immunochemical techniques. The blank samples were prepared from animals raised under experimental farm conditions and known to have never been treated with the compounds. No stilbenes were detected by the most sensitive analytical methods (limit of detection, 0.1 micro-g/l).
