Abstract

The European Commission has over the years supported considerable model development and code assessment in the area of LWR source term, and there have also been extensive efforts by individual member states in this direction. In an attempt to bring together the results and to exploit possible synergies JRC/STI has constructed a first version of ESTER, a portable software framework able to accommodate existing and newly-developed modules for the various components and phenomena involved in a severe accident. The publication, in five volumes, gathers together the main contributions of the contractors charged with developing ESTER under shared-cost-actions. Volume 1 is a ESTER users' manual, with summary information and user instructions for the various tools for database manipulation, graphical output, etc. Volume 2 presents the tools in more detail: the RSYGAL libraries, the Reader, Checker and Analyser, and the graphics tools TIC and VISU. Volume 3 represents ESTER as a distributed system, i.e. the design and development of remote procedure calls (RPC), the respective users' and programmer's manuals and the installation guidelines. Volume 4 refers to the integration of physical modules into ESTER. The core degradation code ICARE-2 and the fission product release module FPRATE are included in the first version of the code. Guidelines for integration are provided, and there is a description of the database structure, together with a report on performance testing. Volume 5 contains the report devoted to the quality assurance of the ESTER development. There is the Quality Plan, the descriptions of the module quality assessment tools FCOMLIS and REPO, and the version tracking tool TEVOL for control of the code development.
