Use of methods and programmes developed in the nuclear field for the treatment and disposal of toxic and hazardous wastes
A complete technical survey on toxic and hazardous wastes was carried out to select the categories suitable for processing with methods and techniques up to now adopted for low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes, taking into account the current regulations on safe management and disposal. The research identified the refuse containing asbestos (RCA) as more suitable for the volume reduction and embedding processes, which are widely used in the radioactive wastes field because of their convenience and technical ease. The report focuses mainly on RCA, in view of the wide use of asbestos in recent decades before the discovery of its toxicological properties. Considering future applications on an industrial scale of defined treatment, the plant-capital and the running-costs were evaluated, and the cost/benefit comparative analysis performed for untreated/treated RCA disposal.
