A short description is given of the PSD testing method with substructuring as implemented in ELSA. Dynamic non-linear analyses and PSD test simulations of two R/C bridges were performed using a linear and a non-linear fibre type model to represent the deck and piers of the bridge respectively. From the results it can be concluded that the deck-pier connection plays an important role in the seismic response of the structure. A full transmission connection for the same bending moment will develop much higher pier shear forces than the hinged connection. The potential of the PSD testing method with substructuring for large bridges has been demonstrated. Reliable results can be obtained with the testing of only part of the structure, which reduces costs considerably.
