PWR fuel rods have been irradiated under realistic power conditions to rod average burnups of 64 MWd/kgU. Post-irradiation examinations were performed in hot cells in order to obtain information with regard to fission gas and fission product release, fuel structure and the interaction between fuel and cladding at high burnups. Typical power histories for the fuel rods are discussed and results show that overall fuel rod behaviour at extended burnup has been satisfactory. In the burnup range investigated no exponential changes in fuel rod behaviour and no burnup limiting phenomena have been experienced.
