Abstract

The electrochemical behaviour of Cd, Zn thioneins (MT) from rabbit liver and horse kidney with respect to pH of solution at the dropping mercury electrode has been studied using differential pulse polarography (DPP). At pH greater than 6, polarograms of MT exhibit three peaks at potentials significantly different from the potentials corresponding to free Cd(2+) and Zn(2+). The apparent acid-base dissociation constant of MT has been estimated. The apparent stability constants of the complexes CdT, ZnT and HgT have been estimated at different pH values. The order of affinity of the metal ions to the thionein has been determined.
