Planning and decision-making in an uncertain world : The challenge of post-normal science
This paper deals with post-normal science, a new scientific method based on the recognition of uncertainty, complexity and quality as essential to the scientific enterprise. Different problem-solving strategies are analysed and extended peer communities are discussed. The epistemological analysis of post-normal science, rooted in the practical tasks of quality assurance, shows that an extension of peer communities, with the corresponding extension of facts, is necessary for the effectiveness of science in meeting new challenges.
