A derivation is given of the ion contribution to the drift wave eigenvalue equation, including an orderly treatment of the terms associated with the magnetic drift. It is shown that, for non-overlapping modes, the ion magnetic drift, being poloidal angle dependent, increases shear damping by a factor [2q(2) + 1](1/2), q being the safety factor on the rational surface. The electron response is derived under conditions prevalent in the trapped electron drift instability. The physical pictures of the rippling and of the ionisation drift instabilities are sketched, and the incidence of the special environment in which they may develop is highlighted.
