Abstract

Plasma-surface interactions are discussed in relation to the formation of plasma impurities and the lifetime of wall components. The basic erosion processes are outlined including physical sputtering, chemical erosion and thermal sublimation and radiation enhanced sublimation (RES). The manipulation of plasma-surface interactions by thin film deposition is described and details of the effect on tokamak plasmas are provided. Future developments which aim to curb the continuous erosion of high heat flux components during quasi steady state plasma operation are discussed.
