Sputtering of limiter and wall materials in the laboratory and in the TEXTOR tokamak
The sputtering of plasma-facing components by energetic ions and charge-exchange neutrals is a major problem for the control of impurities in fusion devices. The main features of the erosion processes on the wall and limiters are discussed with reference to the boundary layer, the plasma sheath, physical sputtering and chemical sputtering, and radiation enhanced sublimation. Methods for the measurement of the sputtering yield and velocity distributions are outlined and setups and measurements on the tokamak TEXTOR are described.
