Abstract

Anomalous transport in tokamak plasmas is discussed and an instability which is specific to the plasma edge is considered. The linear theory of the ionisation drift instability in a strongly inhomogeneous medium is examined together with the quasi-linear theory. Transport across an open magnetic island belt is analysed and the consequences of the proposed transport model are reported. Predictions from the model are compared with values measured on the TEXTOR and ASDEX tokamaks and a scenario for the L to H bifurcation is proposed.
