Conditions for sonic transitions in a scrape-off layer (SOL) are discussed and the importance of particle and momentum sources, temperature gradients, area change and viscous effects is shown. Supersonic boundary conditions and their implications are considered. The numerical model EDGE1D is used to produce a series of sonic transitions over a range of variables and the results obtained are summarised.
