Calling for research in the science of measurement, a process exemplified by redeterminations of the Avogadro constant
This paper discusses basic research in metrology and focuses on work that has been carried out to improve the determination of Avogadro's constant. Improvements in the accuracy of the constant have been achieved and the effect that these changes have on other fundamental constants and equations are reported. The relevance of improved values to the redefinition of the unit for mass, electric current measurements in the pA range and more reliable analyses of gas mixtures, is illustrated. The likely impacts on physics, chemistry, technology and trade of a more widespread understanding and use of the international system of units is considered.
