Very high resolution measurements of the total cross section of natural iron
The total cross-section of natural Fe has been measured with the GELINA pulsed white neutron source with a time-of-flight resolution of about 3.8 ps/m and good statistical precision. Measurements have been performed on three sample thicknesses including one with an average transmission of 0.1, in order to check for consistency and for remaining resolution effects. The cross-sections in the unresolved resonance region still show rather strong fluctuations. These data will be used directly in shielding benchmark calculations. The resonance region data will be analysed by an R-matrix routine and the parameters compared to existing compilations.
