This paper describes the EARSEC (European Airborne Remote SEnsing Capabilities) programme and outlines its key aims and objectives. Two important elements of the programme, the airborne segment and the ground segment, are discussed. Details are provided of the SAR and optical processors which make up the airborne segment. The ground segment is composed of a network of processing nodes that are coordinated by a dispatching centre according to the users' requests.
