This publication contains the contributions to the European symposium on science, technology and European cultural heritage held in Bologna, Italy in June 1989. The papers discuss work in preserving Europe's architectural and cultural heritage including methods for assessing the deterioration of stone monuments, concrete structures and ancient metal objects, and the application of new technologies, laboratory processes and analysis to conservation practice. A number of case studies are presented relating to specific archaeological sites in Europe and posters are included which discuss research on environmental monitoring, microclimate and damage, the mechanisms of environmental damage, natural hazards and modelling methodology and databanks.
