This paper reports on research activities aimed at controlling the fouling of heat exchangers in industry, in order to improve their efficiency and energy-saving. Four principal areas of study are recommended: generic studies, in situ measurements, prevention and cleaning. Two research projects are underway in the JOULE programme; the first is concerned with the measurement and prediction of gas-side fouling, the other with models of fouling in liquid systems, particularly involving industrial process fluids.
