Active hulls melting in a cold crucible by high-temperature direct induction technique
This report summarises the results obtained for feasibility studies carried out on radioactive zircaloy hulls by high temperature cold crucible melting. Four ingots weighing an average of two kilograms each were produced. After each melt, the distribution of the initial hull activity was determined in the ingot, the flux and the off-gas treatment system to assess the decontamination effectiveness. Two ingots were characterised primarily to evaluate their structural homogeneity, internal activity distribution and leaching resistance.
