This is the evaluation report of the scientific and technical achievements of the Human Genome Analysis Programme (HGAP) 1990-1991. It includes sections on the quality and practical relevance of its results, the effectiveness of its management, its ethical, social and legal aspects and its impact on national research programmes. The HGAP is part of the Second Framework Programme of Community activities. HGAP uses new biotechnologies in the study of the human genome, for a better understanding of the mechanism of genetic functions as well as prevention and treatment of human diseases. The report concludes that the HGAP has largely been a success and is an important driving force in the field of European human genome research.
