Abstract

The wide range of surfaces manufactured in the mechanical, optical or electronic sectors of industry coupled with the interlinking of their geometrical, physical and chemical characteristics combine to render the tasks of surface measurement and specification extremely complex. Supported by the Measurements and Testing programme of the European Commission, this report presents the discussions of recent activities on surface characterisation and microhardness measurement held at this workshop. It includes papers presented and an account of unattributed discussion, highlighting areas of difficulty and recommendations for future R&D programmes.
