Abstract

The control of the metal temperature in the tundish is motivated by metallurgical reasons. A new type of heating system is proposed: a C-type transverse flux inductive coil, applied around the ladle shroud. The use of a special ladle shroud is needed to reach a 50% heating efficiency: it has to be necessarily filled with metal during casting and compatible with the starting process of a cast (high metal flow rate). Therefore, a U-bend alumina-graphite ladle shroud was developed and tested in the laboratory and on a semi-industrial scale. The mechanical and thermal behaviour of this new ladle shroud was proved, but potential problems in operation, handling and building it were pointed out. Feasibility tests were also performed at a 8 ton scale, revealing the possibility of heating a metal jet through a conventional ladle shroud equipped with a calibrated hole. A ladle shroud with a surface comparable to that of the coil is one criterion to optimize the heating efficiency.
