Theoretical model of the plasma edge : Part I : Linear and quasi-linear theories of the ionization drift instability in a strongly inhomogeneous medium
This paper concerns the anomalous cross-field transport by the drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a plasma inside which the field lines close, the instability is driven linearly by electron ionisation of neutrals and stabilised by electron Landau damping. The dimensionless parameters characterising the plasma edge and the drift modes are set out and the drift wave eigenmode equation is derived. It is concluded that the quasi-linear model of particle and heat transport across field lines is inadequate for describing stationary edge equilibria.
