An analytical procedure is presented which enables a fast estimate of collision energy dependent cross-section effects on thermal charge exchange spectra. The model is based on experimental evidence and numerical simulations, showing that the observed CX spectra are essentially Gaussian in shape. The predictions of the model are compared to full numerical calculations which solve a three-dimensional integral in velocity space. It is shown that the analytical model is applicable up to thermal velocities of approximately one third of the beam velocity.
