Abstract

This paper describes a methodology for mapping European forest ecosystems using satellite remote sensing. The methodology is being developed as part of the FIRS programme, at the Environmental Mapping and Modelling (EMAP) Unit of the JRC's Institute for Remote Sensing Applications. The primary input data are Landsat Thematic Mapper images from different seasons. The multi-seasonal imagery must first be corrected for the effects of varying sun position, topography and atmospheric conditions. The imagery can then be classified, based on phenological or seasonal variations in the spectral characteristics of each forest type. The methodology is implemented as an integrated software system (SILVICS).
