This publication contains the lectures presented at the Eurocourse on scientific-technical backgrounds for biotechnology regulations held at Ispra in June 1991. Genetic engineering research activities, industrial applications and agricultural applications are discussed including details of genetically engineered and modified micro-organisms, and transgenic plants and crops. Regulatory issues concerning bio-industry development and the release of GMOs in Europe are examined and the regulatory framework for medicinal products derived from biotechnology and patenting biotechnological inventions is outlined.
