This article discusses an investigation of the stability of the classical spheromak (current density proportional to the magnetic field, spherical plasma-vacuum interface, homogeneous magnetic field at infinity). A simple instability proof is presented which shows that the spheromak is unstable to global magnetohydrodynamic tilting modes even if an arbitrary, perfectly conducting rigid wall bounds the vacuum. By continuity this implies that other spheromaks are also unstable.
