This paper addresses the problems faced in formulating oxidation/corrosion standards. The only existing standard for the oxidation resistance of non-oxide ceramics is described and an assessment of corrosive attack is given. The results of pre-normative research are reported in which the method of specimen preparation is shown to affect oxidation rate. Aspects of corrosion test methodologies which require particular attention in further research are discussed.
