This paper describes the basic components and mechanisms of a goal tree-success tree (GTST) model and its capacity to act as a basis for many of the top-level functionalities required for a supervisory system. The concept of functional modelling based on the GTST was applied to the modelling of an auxiliary feed water system of a nuclear power plant, and the scenario studied was that of a loss of main power when the plant enters a state of hot stand-by.
