Introduction to the FIRS programme
The main aim of the Forest Information from Remote Sensing (FIRS) programme is to design and develop a forest information system for the European continent in which equal emphasis is placed on sectorial and environmental data. The FIRS framework of activities involves the stratification and regionalisation of European forest ecosystems, the design of a system of nomenclature for European forest mapping, and work on the European georeferenced forest information directory. On-going forest and natural vegetation ecosystem studies which the programme encompasses are outlined.
